What is Suboxone, and how does it work?
Suboxone combines buprenorphine and naloxone. Buprenorphine is a partial opioid agonist: it attaches to the same receptors as heroin, fentanyl, or pain pills, but with a much gentler effect. It relieves withdrawal and cravings without producing a high, so you can feel like yourself again.
Isn't that just trading one drug for another?
No. Taken as prescribed, Suboxone doesn't make you high or sick. It steadies your brain chemistry so you can work, drive, and be with your family. Your body gets used to it, and stopping suddenly can cause withdrawal, but that's physical dependence, not addiction. Many people taper down with their provider over time; others stay on it long term. Both are valid.
How soon can I get medication?
Your prescription is sent electronically to your pharmacy during your first video visit, and same-day visits are usually available. You'll need to be in mild withdrawal when you take your first dose, and your provider will walk you through the timing.
What happens at the first appointment?
Everything is by video from your phone or computer. A counselor asks about your history and goals, then a medical provider reviews your health and prescribes the right dose. It takes about an hour total.
Do I have to do drug screens?
Yes. Suboxone is a regulated medication and screens are part of responsible treatment. We mail you a test kit and you complete it at home during a short video check-in, so there's no lab visit. Results stay between you and your care team. A positive screen doesn't get you dismissed; it starts a conversation about what you need.
I'm on methadone. Can I switch?
Often, yes. People on 50 mg or less usually switch smoothly. Higher doses may need a gradual taper first. Your provider will plan the transition so withdrawal is as mild as possible.
Do I need a phone, ID, or a permanent address?
You'll need a phone or computer with a camera and some form of ID. You don't need a permanent address. If any of these are a problem, tell us. Our recovery specialists help with exactly this.
Can I sign someone else up?
Treatment is voluntary, so we need to talk to the person directly. But you can call to ask questions on their behalf, and we're happy to make that first call easier for them.
